O’Bryan DeVille - Pottery
(See #9 on Map)
I've had a rewarding career as an engineer but today, after
completing my BFA in ceramics, I make functional pottery and
tile compositions. My goal is to make pottery that is well
crafted, functional, enjoyable to look at, and evokes a desire
to touch and to hold. To make vessels that others choose to
bring into their homes and use in their daily ritual is a
special privledge.
In addition to wheel-thrown functional stoneware, I also make
earthenware tile compositions. These pieces satisfy my desire
to express myself in more representional art forms. My inspiration
derives almost without exception, from personal relationships
and experiences.
There are many ways to express one's self artistically. Why
did I choose ceramics? I identify with Shoji Hamada when he
was asked why he chose ceramics over painting. "Why not
be a potter? Posts can be used, they have a function. Even
a bad pot has some use, but with a bad painting, there is
nothing you can do except throw it away."
