Suely Lohr-Mosaics (See #13 on Map)
I am a contemporary mosaics artist working primarily with vitreous glass, ceramic tiles and stained glass. Mosaics date back to approximately 4,000 B.C. and were made primarily of clay. The word “mosaic” is derived from the Greek meaning “patient work, worthy of the Muses (gods of the arts)”. Although the materials that can be used in modern mosaic are endless, the process is still the same as in ancient times – each piece has to be placed individually to complete the design. It is, undoubtedly, properly named as ‘patient work’.
I have worked with watercolor, acrylics, pottery and weaving in the past and discovered mosaics over 5 years ago. My work spans various artistic creations as well as mosaics reproductions of Impressionist art masters. I have studied under Sonia King, a world renowned mosaic artist. I was born and raised in Brazil which has a strong influence in my work. The inspiration for the colorful tropical birds and small villages in wall hangings as well as the underwater scenes are in part memories of my childhood. In addition to wall hangings, I also create functional mosaic pieces such as picture frames, trivets, trays, outdoor tables, and stepping stones.
